Carcassonne is a collection of buildings from medieval times, which is south-west of the city of the same name. It has a well-preserved city walls, the perimeter of which is no less than 3 kilometers. There is also the Count's castle, and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire.The site overlooks the modern city of Carcassonne, 150 meters above sea level on a plateau. This location had the advantage of limiting the attacks since the western slope was very steep. The occupants were so concentrated defenses on the east side.
The place was inhabited since Gallo-Roman times. It was then a hotbed of trade. In the Middle Ages, the counts of Carcassonne ruled the city, and did build a cathedral in the eleventh century. In the XIII century, King Louis IX erected a second wall to protect the town against frequent attacks. The city was abandoned six centuries later, becoming a popular area before being restored in the nineteenth century as an archaeological site.
